About the YMCA of MEWSA
History
The Y is more than just your local pool, childcare or gym. We are a supportive, nonprofit community center that strives to meet everyone’s wellness needs so we can all live a little healthier. We empower people to learn, grow and thrive through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
In 1921, the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy opened on the corner of Lake Avenue and High Street in Metuchen. The original building was funded by local business owner Charles Edgar of Edgar Clay and Mineral. Over the years, we’ve grown and changed with the times, but the warmth and support Mr. Edgar envisioned for our community remains alive today.
From that very first branch in Metuchen, we’ve expanded to two additional branches in Edison and South Amboy, along with an outdoor pool, ten childcare centers and ten day camps. That makes your Y the largest provider of childcare services in Middlesex County, giving working parents a safe and enriching environment for their children.
Over 1,000 dedicated volunteers help make the Y what it is today, serving the unique needs of more than 35,000 of your friends and neighbors every year. And while every Y is different, we all share a common bond — our people. We bring men, women and children, like you and your family, together to help you realize what you can achieve.
Let's celebrate our success together. Join us we could use someone like you!

A message from our President & CEO
My name is Rose Cushing and I am the President and CEO of the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy. I have been a part of the Y since 1989, and have enjoyed being a part of its evolution over my 29-year journey. I have transitioned through many roles at the Y, beginning as the Director of the Edgar Child Care Center in Metuchen, then moving on to Senior Child Care Director and then District Executive Director of Child Care Services for the YMCA of MEWSA. In 2016, I was honored to be asked to assume the leadership role of this wonderful organization. Since then, I have enjoyed the new experiences and challenges inherent in this position, but most of all, the reward of being able to help our community.
I hope that you will take some time to browse through our many programs and services offered at the Y. There is something for everyone and we pride ourselves on our continuing quest to expand our programs to serve everyone in our communities.
Each branch brings its own unique style and vision, and I encourage you to stop in and take a tour of your nearest branch to see all that we have to offer. As you will quickly realize, we are not just a gym; we are a community! We are dedicated to building strong kids, strong families and strong minds through programs that develop values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The YMCA serves all people regardless of age, religion, gender or financial means and is committed to helping everyone develop a healthy spirit, mind and body.
We hope that you will become a part of our mission and our family.
