About the YMCA of MEWSA
History
The Y is more than just your local pool, childcare or gym. We are a supportive, nonprofit community center that strives to meet everyone’s wellness needs so we can all live a little healthier. We empower people to learn, grow and thrive through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
In 1921, the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy opened on the corner of Lake Avenue and High Street in Metuchen. The original building was funded by local business owner Charles Edgar of Edgar Clay and Mineral. Over the years, we’ve grown and changed with the times, but the warmth and support Mr. Edgar envisioned for our community remains alive today.
From that very first branch in Metuchen, we’ve expanded to two additional branches in Edison and South Amboy, along with an outdoor pool, ten childcare centers and ten day camps. That makes your Y the largest provider of childcare services in Middlesex County, giving working parents a safe and enriching environment for their children.
Over 1,000 dedicated volunteers help make the Y what it is today, serving the unique needs of more than 35,000 of your friends and neighbors every year. And while every Y is different, we all share a common bond — our people. We bring men, women and children, like you and your family, together to help you realize what you can achieve.
Let's celebrate our success together. Join us we could use someone like you!
A message from our President & CEO
My name is Laura Muñoz Humphreys, and it is an honor to serve as the President and CEO of the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy (MEWSA). I am proud to join an organization with such a strong legacy of impact, partnership, and belonging—one that has helped generations of families grow stronger in spirit, mind, and body.
My own YMCA journey began as a teen delegate in Youth & Government and a Counselor-in-Training. Over nearly three decades, I have served in leadership roles across several YMCAs in California, leading innovative programs that empower youth, strengthen families, and build healthier, more connected communities. What has guided me every step of the way is a deep belief that the Y is more than a place, but a purpose.
At MEWSA, we are building on that purpose every day. Our branches are centers of community where children learn, families thrive, and neighbors come together in service and friendship. Whether through early learning, youth sports, wellness programs, or community partnerships, we are united by our mission to ensure that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to opportunities to grow and belong.
As we look to the future, we are focused on innovation, collaboration, and inclusion. We are reimagining how the Y can serve as a hub of community well-being. That we can be a place where health, connection, and purpose intersect. Together with our dedicated staff, volunteers, and partners, we will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve.
I invite you to visit your local Y, experience the warmth of our community, and discover all that we have to offer. The YMCA has always been about people—people who care, who serve, and who believe in the power of togetherness. I’m proud to lead this incredible team and to welcome you to our Y family.
